The Mole is Screen Idle’s Hollywood insider, bringing you the latest showbiz gossip
Hollywood superstar Tom Hanks is well known for his vast collection of vintage typewriters but did you know he has the world’s largest collection of toilets?
The Bachelor Party star first fell in love with the humble lavatory when he moved to California to study theatre and spent many a happy hour sat on the toilet in his modest student apartment.
However, it was the sheer variety of toilets that has captivated him through his life
“Green ones, blue ones, comfy ones, broken ones – it’s almost like every single toilet is different,” said Tom as he enthused about his favourite topic
“They’re not, of course. That would put a tremendous strain on the toilet manufacturing industry.”
Tom recently had a new wing added to his swanky Hollywood mansion in order to display his stunning collection and can often be found walking amongst the rows of toilets stopping occasionally to flush one and smile to himself.
His collection is exhaustive, running from a simple hole in the ground that would have been used by the earliest humans, to the $6m diamond encrusted toilet with swan-feather seat-cover that was personally made to order for Mariah Carey in 1995, but discarded after she became convinced it was haunted.
Tom’s favourite though? Is it the toilet from the first space shuttle? The one-of-kind hemp toilet? The toilet from a parallel dimension?
It’s none of those, it’s the toilet from that modest student apartment of his youth that he had shipped to Hollywood and, to this day, spends many happy hours sitting on.
It has proved problematic for the girl who lives in the apartment now though.
Next week I’ll tell you which celebrity is afraid of buckets.
Mole out.
