The Odyssey delayed to allow Christopher Nolan to make dialogue more inaudible

Christopher Nolan’s next big project, The Odyssey, has been delayed after the perfectionist director found that the dialogue was too clear and easy to understand.

“I’m sorry. Being able to hear the dialogue? Not in one of my films,” exclaimed the Tenet legend.

“I showed an early cut to some friends and their families, and no one turned to their partner and said ‘what did they say? I can’t understand with all the background noise going on.’ 

“I then watched it myself at home and I didn’t have to spend the whole film turning it up when people were speaking and then quickly turning it back down when there was some big sound effect.”

“Well, what kind of a Christopher Nolan film is that!”

Nolan will now work with his sound mixer to alter the levels of dialogue. In some cases, this will mean rerecording the dialogue with actors speaking through a thick wooly jumper to get the right level of inaudibility, or even, in extreme cases, having the actors speak their lines in a different room.

The director sort to reassure fans that it would be worth it.

“I recognise that this delay will be a disappointment, but I want this picture to the best it can be. I mean, imagine Interstellar where you could hear what everyone was saying? You’d be able to understand the plot without having to go and read about it on Wikipedia. Where’s the fun in that?”
