Margot Robbie is preparing for her role in the upcoming remake of the classic Attack of the 50 Foot Woman by growing 45 feet taller.
“You see a CGI 50-foot-tall woman and you’re like ‘whatever, it’s a special effect, I don’t care, I’ll go eat some plums’,” explained director Tim Burton.
“But, you see a real 50-foot-tall woman, you go ‘yes, that’s a real 50-foot-tall woman. I have empathy for her. I’m invested. Screw these plums, I’m watching this movie right now’.”
The scenes in which Robbie’s character is a normal height have already been filmed and there is currently a break of some six months in production whilst Robbie grows to the required height.
“People talk about DeNiro gaining weight for Raging Bull, or Chris Bale dropping all that weight for The Machinist, but no-one has ever gained height for a role before. That right there is commitment, it’s dedication to the craft. Did Tom Cruise gain height for Jack Reacher? Hell no. Lazy. I guess Margot just cares more,” continued the Big Fish director.
He then went on to explain Robbie’s daily regime for growing.
“She wakes up, puts on some really heavy shoes and then hangs from a doorway for seven hours. Then she goes to bed with some heavy weights on her head and feet so she doesn’t start to shrink overnight. That’s pretty much it, just every couple of weeks, we have to remember to replace the door with a slightly taller door.”
If, however, the worst should happen, and Robbie is unable to grow the required 45 feet taller, Burton will simply reduce the size of all her co-stars to a couple of inches and film on tiny, model sets.
“It wouldn’t be ideal. No one’s every tried to reduce the height of actors before. Presumably a strict diet would work or, you know, an axe to the knees. But, whatever, it doesn’t matter. We won’t need to do that. Margot is a pro. Every confidence.”
