So cute! Bored, housebound Lars Von Trier remakes Antichrist with Lego

Lars von Trier, the pioneering Danish filmmaker, found himself with time on his hands during the lockdown and so decided, adorably, to remake his experimental erotic psychological horror film Antichrist using Lego.

Adhering to a strict Lego Dogma 95 manifesto, von Trier allowed himself to only use the Lego bricks and minifigures from a 2009 Lego road repair set.

“Instead of a man and a woman living in a cabin in the woods, the Lego version of Antichrist is two builders who live in bulldozer, otherwise the story is broadly the same,” said von Trier.

The film opens with the two builders having sex in the steamroller, while a third builder falls to his death outside, in what must be the cutest depiction of familial tragedy ever shown on film.

The light then changes to indicate that the couple have moved their bulldozer to the country to recover from the tragedy. One builder then treats the other with a series of Lego psychotherapy sessions that often result in delightful graphic Lego sex.

“The sex was difficult – it needed to feel natural and realistic, yet erotic,” said von Trier.

“There was a degree of difficulty in representing that using two Lego builder minifigures, but I think that the effect is reasonably successful.”

The Lego couple the attack each other in a violent, bloody and adorable sequence.

“Raspberry sauce for the blood,” said von Trier.

“Ketchup came out in blobs too big for Lego men.”

The film then culminates in one Lego builder killing the other and escaping the bulldozer into the forest.

Despite the hit that the loveable Lego Antichrist has become, Lars von Trier has no plans to remake its spiritual sequel Nymphomaniac using Lego.

“No,” he confirmed

“No one needs to see Shia LaBeouf’s Lego cum-face*.”

Weekend Film Guide is right here – probably some form of Lego film on. Not this though.
