Interstellar’s depiction of planets where dialogue is inaudible scientifically accurate, say experts

One of the most controversial aspects of Christopher Nolan’s 2014 epic Interstellar was the decision to feature almost inaudible dialogue. However, experts have confirmed that this could well be scientifically correct.

“There are an infinite number of planets in our universe. It stands to reason that they will be infinite in their variety,” explained Stewart James, Professor of Planets and Space and That Sort of Thing at Oxford University.

“Some will be entirely purple, some will be populated entirely with people who look a bit like Tom Hanks, and some will be quite like our own planet except it will be really, really difficult to make out what people are saying.”

Professor James posits that these would be some of the most annoying planets in the universe.

“Oh, certainly, yes. Imagine a planet where you’ll constantly have to be going ‘sorry, could you speak up a bit.’ I mean, that would get really irritating. So, the irritating nature of watching Interstellar and having to turn the volume up for the dialogue and then down again when there’s a big explosion or something, that’s actually a very accurate depiction of what it must be like to live on one of those planets.”

Professor James went on to say that whilst the depiction of inaudible dialogue on other planets could well be scientifically accurate, there is no rational, scientific explanation for why the dialogue is inaudible in any of the scenes set on Earth.

“No, that’s just annoying filmmaking.”
