Covid film cancellations mean Sonic the Hedgehog current favourite to sweep 2021 Oscars

With huge swathes of films’ releases being cancelled in the wake of the Covid-19 quarantine, the field for the 2021 Oscars is narrowing dramatically.

As a result of this, it is looking like Sonic the Hedgehog could be the film to beat, with many experts predicting that, in the absence of any serious competition, it could sweep the awards next year.

“Well, look, you’ve got to give the Oscars to someone,” explained Kelly Grace, an expert in both films and hedgehogs.

“If, as it seems, literally no other films are going to be released over the next year, then one would imagine that only Sonic the Hedgehog, Fantasy Island and Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot are going to be in contention – in which case, everything is going to Sonic the Hedgehog.

“We are looking at the very real prospect of a Titanic or It Happened One Night style sweep of the 2021 Oscars and having Sonic the Hedgehog become one of the single most garlanded films of all-time.”

Director Jeff Fowler was playing down his film’s Oscar chances.

“Hey, I just made a film about a blue hedgehog that I wanted people to go out and have a good time with,” he said.

“If it ends up sweeping the Oscars and proving all those snooty critics wrong, well then, that’s just a real nice bonus.”

Meanwhile, the prospect of Sonic the Hedgehog being the big winner at the 2021 Oscars has given the Academy something of a logistical headache.

“Well, it’s certainly a tricky one,” explained Stewart James, director of the awards.

“I mean, the lead character is a hedgehog. Do we abandon the ‘Best Actor’ award? Do we introduce a ‘Best Hedgehog’ award?

“It’s going to take some thinking about.”
