James Mangold’s has cleared up the confusion caused by the announcement that Timothee Chalamet will be starring in his forthcoming Bob Dylan biopic by clarifying that he would be playing Vanilla Ice.
“To be clear, Timothee will be playing a young Vanilla Ice in my forthcoming picture, the role of Bob Dylan is yet to be cast,” he said.
The film will focus on the period where Dylan pivoted from folk music to rock and roll, and the little-known friendship between Dylan and Ice that could have seen his seminal 1965 album contain one side of novelty rap music instead of the rock songs we’re familiar with.
“It is a fascinating and little-known relationship in Dylan’s life,” explained the director.
“Here is Dylan, a folk singer and the darling of Greenwich and, just by chance he runs into Vanilla Ice who, at that time, is just a kid, and the pair become lifelong friends.
“It is Ice who pushes Bob towards the electric guitar and who actually pushes him to more radical musical experiments which leads to Subterranean Homesick Blues and that really is a proto-rap record the influences of which can be heard in Ice’s seminal 1990 hit Ice Ice baby which was famously co-written by Dylan himself.”
Chalamet’s casting in the film will see the young actor join Adam Driver as Benny Hill, Denzel Washington as the ghost of Easy-E and Meryl Streep as Barney the Dinosaur.
Dylan: Stop, Collaborate and Listen will be released early next year.
