A week on from Will Smith slapping Chris Rock, and there are currently three films about the incident in development and one mini-series.
The most prestigious is a Disney production that will be directed by Steven Spielberg that has a budget of $320m and will star Chris Rock as Will Smith and Meryl Streep as Chris Rock. Everyone else will be played by themselves and it will be actually filmed at the Oscars using the time-travel film technology Spielberg himself invented for the Jurassic Park films.
“Will Smith slapping Chris Rock is the greatest story of our times,” said the Hook director.
“This picture will examine everything about the incident. Why? How? Where? Who? How Many? Did it? Was it? Am I? It will be the definitive account of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock.”
There is another film being developed by A24 that will be much more experimental with both Will Smith and Chris Rock being played by Stephen Yuen and taking place at an abandoned mall.
Lin-Manuel Miranda is putting the finishing touches to a musical film about the event which includes the songs ‘Take it out of your mouth’ and ‘I’m King Richard’
The mini-series is expected to debut on Netflix in Autumn, will run to ten episodes dealing with the run-up to the slap and the aftermath up to and including the development of a Netflix mini-series.
There are also two plays, a podcast and a concept album by Kanye West all currently in the works about the event which is now seen as the defining moment of the century so far.
