The time Samuel L Jackson was in every film made for year

Sam Jackson was tired, he was flying into Paris to appear in a small arthouse film about a free-spirited French artist who has sex a lot.

He’d already filmed a scene in London for a new British comedy about a posh man who gets in an amusing scrape with a cow and he’d need to be back in Hollywood before bedtime to film some night scenes on a new blockbuster about a giant mutant heron.

It was 1996, and Samuel L Jackson had been cast in every film made that year.

“Man, ’96 was a tough year,” said Jackson in Wogan interview from 2003.

“I think it worked out I made 1104 movies in ’96. Every single movie made, I was in it.

“I slept well on New Year’s Eve that year, you know what I’m saying.”

Although his biggest role of the year was in the John Grisham adaptation – Time to Kill, Jackson can be seen as a Vulcan in Star Trek: First Contact, as Spud’s mum in Trainspotting, and as a Dalmatian in the live action adaptation of 101 Dalmatians.

“I don’t know man, people kept asking. I didn’t want to turn anyone down,” he said of the extraordinary year.

“I didn’t set out to be in every film that year, I guess it just happened, you know?”

His favourite from the year will come as a surprise to many.

“Well look, Time to Kill was a great role, but the one I enjoyed the most was a German comedy about a woman who couldn’t stop farting.

“Man, they say that those Germans don’t have a sense of humour. But a woman? And she can’t stop the farting? That’s some funny stuff right there.

“I played a guy who sold her a hat. Great role, great film, great times, man.”

In 1997 he returned to normal and after taking a well-earned January off, he took the rest of the year easy and just appeared in 94 films, just a little below his career average of 108 films a year.
