Tom Cruise jumps out of plane onto exploding motorcycle whilst popping out for milk

In what is being called one of the most thrilling stunts ever performed, Tom Cruise recently jumped out of a plane onto an exploding motorcycle whilst popping to the shop for some milk

“Just popping to the shop for milk? It’s not engaging. It’s not cinematic. There’s no excitement for the fans and that’s simply not good enough,” explained the Rock of Ages star.

“I wanted to pop to the shops for some milk in a way that no one’s ever popped to the shop for some milk before. I wanted it to be spectacular, to really push the boundaries of what popping to the shops for some milk could be.”

After realising that he had no milk for a cup of tea that he’d just made, the first thing the movie icon did was to call his friend and long-term Mission Impossible collaborator Christopher McQuarrie.

“Whenever Tom calls, I know we’re going to be something crazy. Something extreme,” laughed the director.

“So, when he said he needed to pop to the shop for some milk I knew he didn’t just want to walk round the corner to the shop and buy some milk. It was going to be something way bigger than that.”

An initial plan to free climb a 2,000 feet elite 7c+ wall and then base jump into the shop was quickly abandoned as there were no mountains, gorges or hills in the swanky LA neighbourhood Tom calls home, likewise, plans to freedive to the shop were judged impractical as it would necessitate the construction of some sort of artificial lake or reservoir. Soon enough though, the pair hit on a plan to parachute out of a plane.

“I have a private airstrip not to far away,” continued the star of The Mummy and Far and Away, “I can be there in ten minutes. Go up in a plane, jump out, parachute down, pop into the shop and get my milk.

However, a simple parachuting stunt wasn’t enough the ‘Cruiser.’

“Oh no, it’s never that simple,” laughed McQuarrie.

“No one has ever parachuted out of a plane onto an exploding motorcycle before. It’s too dangerous. It was a stunt we looked at for the last Mission Impossible picture, but we could’t find space for it. Popping to the shop for some milk, though? It was perfect.”

The pair made the arrangements. It was going to be difficult. Perhaps the most difficult stunt ever attempted. If Cruise jumped to late, he would land in the middle of the motorcycle conflagration. Too early, and the motorcycle would explode after he’d gone into the shop.

“Luckily, it all went to plan,” continued the star, “we did a couple of practice jumps and we had it pretty well nailed down. When it came time to pop to the shop for real, the jump went perfectly, I parachuted out of the plane and, as I landed on the motorcycle, it exploded, throwing me into the shop where I bought some milk, and a scratch card as well.”

Everything had gone to plan. There was only one problem.

“By the time I got back, my tea had gone cold. So I had to make another one.”
