The hit 1965 musical is to be remade but with the focus shifting from the songs and romantic story line to the more exciting bit at the end with all the Nazis, it has been confirmed.
Favourite Things, a relatively new film production company based in London, made the announcement at the Toronto International Film Festival last week, stunning critics and audiences alike with the inferred suggestion that such a classic masterpiece would need remaking at all.
Director and Screenwriter Seth Hill defended the decision, explaining “If a film is a classic, then that is precisely the reason to remake it. To explore different angles, to examine the much-loved characters in a different light.
“This will satisfy the curiosity of all those who want to see more of that part of the story between the Von Trapp family singers being chased out of the concert hall, and them making it safely to the Swiss border.
“I’m sure most would agree that the ratio of songs to gunfire in the original movie was far too skewed in the song direction.
“I watched it when I was a kid, and to be honest there was a little too much singing and romance for my liking, and then there was four and a half minutes of guns and edge of your seat Nazi pursuit that had been stuck on the end like an after-thought.”
He added, “I’m also keen to use the 18 certificate our film will undoubtedly receive to expand a little on that bit at the start of the film where the head nun is saying Maria has been naughty. Naughty how? And with whom? You’ll have to wait and find out.”
Questioned further about the necessity of a remake at all, Mr Hill replied “Well The Italian Job was a classic 1960s movie – and the remake of that in the noughties was pretty awesome. It had Jason Statham in it, don’t forget.
“We’ve approached him to play Captain Von Trapp, but he hasn’t got back to us yet.”
