A trailer for The Mandalorian Season 2 has debuted online and shows off an austere, black and white, Bergman-esque aesthetic that’s a real departure for the series.
The trailer showed Pedro Pascal’s Mandalorian looking out over a desolate field behind a ruined farmhouse whilst an old man sobs quietly in the corner.
The whole trailer is filmed in a stark black and white and soundtracked by a solitary mournful violin.
“I was pretty pleased with the first season of The Mandelorian,” said producer Jon Favreau.
“But if there was one complaint that I heard over and over again from fans, it’s that they would like to have seen a more thoughtful meditation on the nature of mortality and existence.
“So, we’ve really tried to inject that Bergman-esque vibe into the show for the new season and I think we’ve pretty much nailed it.”
It is thought that the trailer is showcasing a scene from the opening episode that sees of the Mandalorian or ‘Din Djarin’ having a long talk to an old man who’s recently lost his wife and sees only futility and sorrow in his remaining years.
“We’re pretty excited about this new direction,” confirmed Chabon.
“We’ve got one episode which is just a 40-minute shot of a crow picking at the rotting carcass of a cat whilst in the distance someone occasionally screams.”
“It’s the Mandalorian series for our time.”
The Mandalorian Season 2 will be called Mandalorian: The Emptiness at the Heart of Man. It will debut in late October and is unlikely to feature any ewoks.
