Talking dogs, fancy hats, 60s New York – Javier Bardem says Dune sequel ‘will surprise people’

Javier Bardem has read the script for the upcoming Dune sequel and he thinks it will ‘surprise’ people.

“I’ve got to be honest, I didn’t expect quite as much of the new movie to be set in 60s New York,” he said.

“But, you know, you see it in the context of the story, and it does make sense that Paul has to dress up as a hippie and go to a series of groovy parties in order track down a certain, potent batch of LCD that will allow him to drug a sandworm.”

The actor plays Stilgar, the leader of the Fremen tribe that Paul and his mother meet at the end of the first film. In the second film he has a talking dog called Edgar.

“Again, not something I saw coming and something that people who are familiar with the book will be surprised about.

“Edgar is a little Spaniel who speaks in an upper-class British accent and is part pet/part advisor to Stilgar. I think he’ll be a big hit, particularly with younger fans of the film. We may even see a Dune soft toy? I don’t know, that’s just my speculation.”

Perhaps the least controversial departure from the first film is that everyone wears fancy hats.

“Yes, I think most people knew that was coming, didn’t they? The first film was great, but I think most people wanted to see more fancy hats.

“Mine is a big Carmen Miranda-style fruit hat. Looking forward to seeing that.”

The Dune Sequel is scheduled for release in October 2023 and provisionally titled Dune 2: Dune Harder, but that is subject to change.
