After he has completed work on his new Star Wars film, it has been announced that Hunt for the Wilderpeople director Taika Waititi will direct 2021.

“I don’t think that anyone is going to argue that 2020 has been a disappointment,” explained producer Stewart James.

“So, with 2021, we really needed to think about a big-name director, someone with a proven track record and, to be honest, someone who can inject a little hope, joy, and optimism into proceedings.”

It is thought that Waititi will making sweeping changes to the current narrative.

“Well, I hope so, I mean, there’s a lot of problems,” continued James.

“The main characters are horrible, venal and stupid and all the plotlines are catastrophic and depressing. A better soundtrack would help, too.”

“We’re really hoping Taika can turn that around. I mean, look at what he did with Thor: Ragnarok – it was hilarious, brightly coloured, exciting. Even the bad guy was fun to be around. We’re definitely looking at something like that for 2021.”

Waititi has given an indication on what we can expect from his 2021

“Well, we’ll tie up the current plots quickly. The bad guys go to jail and everyone gets better in January.

“Then we have groovy aliens land and challenge the people of Earth to appear in the alien Olympics. But, the alien Olympics are different from the Earth Olympics and instead of running and jumping and throwing stuff, the events are things like putting on plays in your garden, playing Jimi Hendrix songs in your brass band and whittling stuff in the woods.

“All humans come together to train for the alien Olympics in November and then have a really nice Christmas together.”

It is currently unknown if, after 2021, Taika Waititi will stay on for sequel 2022.

“We don’t know,” said James

“But don’t worry, we’ve got some great directors lined up – Paul Feig, Greta Gerwig, Olivia Wilde.

“We’re not going to make the same mistake as we did with 2020 – Roland Emmerich?!? What were we thinking?”
