The 40th anniversary rerelease of Talking Heads’ legendary concert film Stop Making Sense will see newly created scenes with a CGI Jabba the Hutt inserted into the film.
“Jonathan [Demme]’s original vision of film had several scenes with inter-galactic crimelord Jabba the Hutt joining the band, but in 1984 there wasn’t the technology available to render him successfully,” explained producer Stewart James.
“Now, it’s a rarely trivial matter to use CGI to created him, and we can finally see the film as it was originally intended.”
The first new scene comes almost immediately, as David Byrne plays Psycho Killer, Jabba is seen walking across the stage, whistling innocently.
In Once in a Lifetime, Jabba joins the band onstage for the chorus. For Girlfriend is Better, Jabba joins the band holding a picture of Princess Leia.
“This is, finally, the definitive version of Stop Making Sense. We’ll have Jabba on the poster, it’s fantastic,” continued James.
The announcement appears to have proved an inspiration to Martin Scorsese, who is planning a rerelease of his classic concert film The Last Waltz with a CGI Jabba the Hutt replacing both Van Morrison for Caravan and Neil Diamond for Dry Your Eyes.
