Spirit of Dogtanian! New cartoon dog version of Mayor of Casterbridge coming soon

There was excitement amongst fans of long-running 80s cartoon epic Dogtanian and the three Muskehounds as it was announced that Thomas Hardy’s wife-selling classic The Mayor of Casterbridge will debut in cartoon dog form next year.

The Mastiff of Woofterbridge is currently in the final stages of production and is scheduled to start in March.

“We loved Dogtanian,” said Terry Or, who produced Woofterbridge alongside partner Alan Sation.

“Well, I say ‘loved,’ perhaps more ‘had inflicted on us.’

“So, we thought that perhaps it was time for a new generation of children to have to endure their own cartoon dog version of a work of classic literature that goes on forever.”

Alan Sation, known as Al to his friends, explains how they settled on the Mayor of Casterbridge for their adaptation.

“Well, the first thing we needed was a classical work of literature that would be impossible to enjoy unless through the medium of cartoon dogs – so that put Thomas Hardy at the top of the list.

“We did consider Jude the Obscure but that has a plot that hinges on having a sexual relationship with your cousin, which isn’t something that works terribly well with cartoon dogs – as anyone who’s seen some of those old banned Scooby Doo episodes can testify to.”

Ultimately the pair settled on the Mayor of Casterbridge.

“Yes, there’s something about a man who drunkenly sells his wife and then dies alone in shame and ignominy that will just chimes perfectly with the medium of cartoon dogs.

“Seeing a cartoon Labrador confront a Mastiff about drunkenly auctioning her off at a fair is powerful yet accessible. I think the kids are going to love it.

“Well, I say ‘love’…”

The Mastiff of Woofterbridge will be on nightly when children get home from school until they turn twenty, at least, that’s what it will feel like.
