Shawshank Redemption sequel sees Andy team up with Hadley to break back INTO Shawshank

A newly announced Shawshank Redemption sequel will see Andy Dufresne forced to team up with Captain Hadley to break back into Shawshank.

“Shawshank Redemption is a perfect film, it doesn’t need a sequel, it’s story is complete,” said producer Stewart James.

“However, we really, really like money so we figured, hey! Let’s make Shawshank 2!”

The film will begin with the Red and Andy’s wedding and, as the guests leave, one remains: Captain Hadley. He explains that hand-made chess pieces are now worth millions of dollars. So, Andy and Hadley decide to put aside their differences, break back into Shawshank and get Andy’s chess pieces that he made in the first film.

“You know, along the way they’ll learn about each other, friendship and all that stuff. We’ll put in some funny bits too because the first one was fine, but could be a bit of a downer – maybe have some good slapstick humour in the sewage tunnel on the way back in.

“And, obviously, we’ll have loads of callbacks to the first one. When Hadley’s going too slowly, Andy calls out ‘Come on, get busy living or get busy dying.’ Hadley asks how Andy ‘can be so obtuse.’ Once they’ve broke back in Andy turns to Hadley and laughs ‘you’re the only guilty man in Shawshank.’ Everyone loves callbacks.”

James and the writers considered a number of sequel ideas before settling on the break-in.

“Oh yeah. Hadley is Andy’s father, Shawshank Zombie Apocalypse, Red travelling back in time to stop young Andy before he finds his wife in bed with the guy, The Joker in Shawshank, aliens, superheroes – I mean, all great stuff, and we’ll be looking at them maybe for a third film, but breaking back into Shawshank was definitely the way to go.”

The announcement of the Shawshank Redemption sequel follows on from last week’s surprise announcement that the other Stephen King 90s classic The Green Mile is getting a sequel that begins with John Coffey appearing at Paul’s front door and saying “You’ve got to come with me, it’s your kids, something has got to be done about your kids. We have to go…back to the future.”
