It has been revealed that wild Pokemon are currently worryingly close to extinction after four years of being hunted using Pokemon Go.
“We believe there is a colony of about twelve Charizards in the Highlands of Scotland that could be the last ones on the planet,” explained Pokemon conservationist Stewart James.
“Now wild Charizards have always been rare, but having just one colony left is devastating.”
Pokemon Go is a smartphone app that allows for the tracking and capture of any wild Pokemon.
“It’s just constantly scanning. You could be walking through a park, this app tells you there’s a Mewtwo nearby and, bang, you’ve captured it.”
However, what the app doesn’t say is what happens to the Pokemon after capture.
“Okay, so there is this tiny space in a smartphone called memory and when the Pokemon is captured, that’s where it’s kept,” continued James, demonstrating on his on phone.
“Now that’s cruel enough when it’s just one or two of them that have been snatched from their natural habitat, but some people can have hundreds jammed into this tiny space.”
Even more horrific is the fate of the Pokemon when the ‘memory’ becomes full.
“It just starts deleting the Pokemon out of existence,” explained a visibly upset James.
“One day it’s a Snorlax happily running around in a field, the next it’s just winked out of existence.
“That has been going on, unregulated, for four years now and the wild Pokemon population is just devastated.
“Across the globe, there’s hardly any left anywhere.”
Mr James believes that we’ve been in a similar situation before.
“I would suggest, millions of years ago, that cavemen had a similar app on their smartphones – Dinosaur Go – they played it, they had fun, they captured dinosaurs on their smartphones, but they didn’t consider the implications of what they were doing and before they knew what had happened, dinosaurs had become extinct.”
We can only hope that humanity doesn’t make the same mistake again.
