Fans of gritty gangster drama Peaky Blinders are in for a shock as the new season sees the tough Birmingham family swapping a life of crime and violence for a nice fete and sick pony.

Beginning some two years after the previous series saw the family taken into custody, the series opens with a tense meeting between the Shelbys as Tommy explains that he’s found a nice pony.

And it’s sick.

“We’ve had three series of brutality, violence and crime,” said creator Steven Knight.

“I think that what people really want now from Peaky Blinders is a lovely story about a sick pony and a nice fete.”

The plot will feature the Shelbys organising the fete to raise money to get some medicine for the sick pony.

They will be aided by a local group of gypsies, some London gangsters and the police, who all put aside their differences for the sake of the sick pony.

In keeping with the change in focus, instead of the soundtrack consisting of Nick Cave, Tom Waits and the White Stripes, this season will be soundtracked by Steps, Cliff Richard, and the St Winifred’s School choir.

If the new direction proves successful the next season will see the Shelbys open a kitten sanctuary and adopt an orphan.
