New Star Trek prequel set in 1996

Following the success of Star Trek Discovery, a prequel to the original Star Trek, a new prequel to that prequel has been announced set in 1996.

Star Trek: Seeds of Something No One Understands will feature the great-great-great grandparents of heroes such as Kirk, Picard and Riker.

“Yeah, Enterprise, Discovery, that film with the whales. People love Star Trek prequels,” said showrunner William Stewart.

“So, if people love prequels then people are going to love prequels to prequels twice as much. I mean, that’s just basic math.”

The new prequel will explore the lives of the distant ancestors of Kirk and Data as they pop to the shops, make a nice casserole and look out of the window. All the while unaware of the lives that great-great-great grandchildren will lead as they pioneer humankind’s advances into space.

“That’s the real tension of the piece, the audience will know that Barry Riker will pass his genes to space-trombonist Will Riker, but Barry has no idea and just goes about his every day nineties life of watching laserdiscs and listening to B*witched.

“One of Data’s ancestors is a Tamagotchi that a kid got for Christmas and then after a couple of days got bored with and threw it in a drawer. After several years of being hidden at the back of a drawer, it developed a rudimentary AI in order to regularly feed itself.

“Knowing that Tamagotchi’s descendent will go on to become the first artificial lifeform in the Federation will add a real frisson for Star Trek fans.

If successful, Star Trek: Seeds of Something No One Understands could spawn another prequel set during the late 1800s featuring Jaques Picard as a milliner who quite likes astrology for reasons he doesn’t understand.
