A new series of popular police thriller Line of Duty has been confirmed but, in a surprising development, writer Jed Mercurio has announced that there will be a change of direction.
“Line of Duty? It’s just been getting way too serious in the last couple of series,” he said.
“So, this new series is going to have much more of a family sitcom feel to it.
“We’re going to play up Hastings’ clumsiness, so he’s always bumping into things and tripping over and going ‘mother of God, I just stubbed my toe’
The character of Steve will and his ‘ladies man’ nature will give the new series its farcical elements.
“Oh yes, Steve is great. Really funny. So, he’ll have a sexy lady round, and they’ll be drinking champagne and snogging and then another sexy lady turns up and so he has to hide the first sexy lady in the wardrobe and he’s just running about trying to deal with all the sexy ladies.”
Finally, Kate will remain a no-nonsense copper.
“Yes, but we’re really going to make her pompous and serious and trying to get promotions all the time. So, she’ll be trying to do well and show off to DCC Wise but there’ll be Hastings tripping over and Steve getting off with a girl and Kate will be like ‘oh god – you two!’
“It’s going to be hilarious.”
Mercurio also revealed that the second series of his hit thriller The Bodyguard will be a musical.
“Possibly a rap musical,” he said.
“We haven’t decided quite yet.”
