New Portrait of a Lady on Fire rollercoaster opens

Warning: This article contains spoilers for both Portrait of a Lady on Fire and rollercoasters.

There was excitement amongst fans of heart-breaking historical LGBTQ romances as it was announced that a new rollercoaster has opened based on 2019’s instant classic Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

From the outside, the rollercoaster has been designed to resemble the remote Brittany island on which the film is set and, from the inside, the rollercoaster is based around aspects of the plot.

The rollercoaster begin by travelling through replicas of the rugged coastline that Heloise and Marianne would walk daily in the early part of the film.

Speeding up, the rollercoaster appears to smash through the initial portrait of Heloise that Marianne completes surreptitiously, early in the film.

It then culminates in a huge loop around the bonfire on the beach that symbolises the only fleeting freedom that is available to women in the patriarchal French society of the late eighteenth century.

The rollercoaster finally comes to a halt with a huge model of Heloise behind it, forcing people to turn back to look at it and so replicate the climatic moment in the film.

“This is great news, I’m excited,” said rollercoaster and art film fanatic Stewart James.

“There is a dearth of rollercoasters based on historical LGBTQ romances that, frankly, shames the industry.

“I can’t wait to give it a ride.”

It is expected that, should the rollercoaster prove successful, it will set a trend for new film-based rollercoasters which will see a Phantom Thread rollercoaster, a Nomadland rollercoaster and a They Shall Not Grow Old rollercoaster all being built in the coming years.
