Gaming behemoth Epic has announced that the new Fortnite season will be themed around the films of Swedish auteur Ingmar Bergman.
Beginning in a few weeks, the changes will be stark.
For the duration of the season, the game will run in black and white, will feature an enigmatic-staring-into-the-middle-distance emote and every fifteen minutes, all players will drop their weapons, fall to their knees and sob uncontrollably.
“Yeah, we were going to have a season based around sexy bikini-wearing punk rock aliens,” said game producer Max Ullman.
“But then, I was kicking back one Friday with my buds and we were watching Persona, and I just knew that’s what we had to do.”
New skins for the Bergman season will include the medieval peasant, the mourning widow, and the disillusioned intellectual.
There will also be a special in-game event in which all players come together to discuss the futility of existence whilst rain batters the rusty tin roof above.
Players were excited.
“Dude, this is awesome news,” said Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the US House of Representatives and huge Fortnite fan.
“I’ve always wanted to take a sober and reflective look at the human condition through the medium of a Battle Royale game, and now I finally can.
“Bitchin’”
Ullman also gave a tantalising peak at future seasons.
“Okay, after this we’ve a season based on 19th Century gothic poetry, then a season themed around gravel and towards the end of the year we’ve got great plans for a season based on the mathematic theories of Italian polymath Girolamo Cardano.
“It’s going to be wild.”
