Following the triumph of Green Book at this year’s Oscars, the Academy has announced that it will be changing the name of its most prestigious award from ‘Best Picture’ to ‘A Picture That Came Out Recently.’
The change has been decided on because it’s clearly far too much bother to actually pick the genuine ‘Best Picture’ of the year, as evidenced by the award going to Green Book this year instead of Chloe Zhao’s The Rider.
“Yeah, you know, there’s a lot of pictures that come out each year,” said Academy spokesman Stewart James.
“Picking out the best one? It’s hard, it’s really hard. I mean, you got to watch them all, understand them, remember them, rate them and then come out with the best.
“Frankly, most of us in the Academy would rather kick back and play Super Mario than go through all that.
“So, the easiest thing to do is rename the award ‘A Picture That Came Out Recently’ then we can all just look down the movie theater listings, find any film and pick that, then get back to Super Mario.
“To be honest, it’s what we did this year with Green Book.”
Despite the somewhat dramatic change to their most prestigious award, for reasons best known to themselves, the Oscars will still refer to ‘films’ as ‘pictures’ despite the fact that they are clearly films and not pictures.
