The trailer for the long-awaited new Downton Abbey movie has debuted and has revealed that the plot will feature the Crawley family, along with their loyal staff, hunting down a giant, radioactive shark.

Set some years after the series, and England is plagued by mysterious attacks on coastal bathers.

Whilst entertaining a young scientist, Lady Mary discovers that the British Government have been working on a giant, radioactive shark to help with the defence of the realm.

Lady Mary and her father, the Earl of Grantham, quickly put two and two together and realise that it is this giant, radioactive shark who is attacking bathers.

The pair of them, accompanied by loyal butler Carson, and the Dowager Countess, set out to destroy the beast, but they find themselves pursued by both the British government, desperate to cover up their complicity in the attacks, and foreign agents, who want the giant, radioactive shark for their own country’s defence.

“I suppose you could see it as a departure from the Downton Abbey,” said writer and creator Julian Fellowes.

“But, don’t forget, we did have that plot line in the third season where the Crawleys have to hunt down a giant, mechanical spider from Mars who is stalking the Scottish Highlands.

“Or did we cut that? I forget.”

If successful, it is expected that the film will spawn a film franchise in which the Crawleys battle a series of improbable creatures such as dinosaurs, vampires, and the cast of Call the Midwife.
