Luther film ‘to break out of the gritty streets on London’ by going to space!

Further details have emerged about the long-awaited film version of Idris Elba’s Luther.

A determination to move the action out of the familiar streets of London will see much of the action set in space.

“It was important to not just make a longer version of a TV episode. It needed to be more cinematic, and what is more cinematic than the moons of Jupiter, the Milky Way, and the terrifying Martian men of Mars,” explained director Jamie Payne.

The film begins in London, and Luther’s arch-nemesis Alice Morgan is doing another killing spree, but as Luther follows the clues, he finds that she’s gone to Mars to escape punishment.

“That’s actually something that’s based on fact. Mars is outside the jurisdiction of the British legal system so you could literally murder someone, then go to Mars, and they wouldn’t be able to touch you for it,” continued Jamie

“I mean, I say ‘fact.’ I haven’t actually checked that, but I’d be very surprised if it wasn’t a fact. How could you arrest someone on Mars!?! Mad.”

Luther then follows Alice to Mars, but finds that she’s been captured by Martians who have tortured her to reveal that everyone will be watching Strictly on Saturday evening, so that’s the best time to invade.

“So, that’s a real dilemma for John. Does he just take Alice back to Earth and finally arrest her, risking a Martian invasion, or does he use her terrifying psychopathic instincts to fight against the Martians and stop the invasion?

“I’m hoping that it’s still recognisably Luther, but by bringing in the whole Martian invasion aspect, it becomes that much bigger than just a TV episode.”

Luther and Martian Men of Mars will be released in March 2023
