The upcoming live action version of ‘Hong Kong Phooey’ will now feature a real dog, after Eddie Redmayne pulled out for fear of accusations of ‘dog-washing’.
The director, Guillermo del Tarantino, said the film would now use a real dog in the main role, “Eddie, I love more than anything, but he was really hamming this role up. Almost too cartoon like, to be honest. The way he was jumping out of the locker and mopping the floor was not really giving us the realism we needed.
“I want this to be a gritty version of the same events and not a screwball comedy.
“So I got a labrador from a pet shop and shoved him in a karate outfit.”
Redmayne himself denied the allegations, saying “At no point during the making of this feature have I been involved in any ‘dog-washing’ whatsoever.
“I, and the director, have reiterated that no dogs were washed in the nine months making this feature. The set stank like you cannot imagine. I mean, I was literally gagging for the last three months, and there was a massive brown stain going diagonally across the carpet in my trailer.”
