It was announced yesterday that Yara Shahidi will be playing Tinkerbell in a new live-action version of Peter Pan and everyone on the internet is certain to react with grace, goodwill, and excitement at a talented actress securing such a prominent role.
The fact that she is black, continuing the recent push for diversity in prestige Disney movies is likely to be a source for even greater excitement and delight.
“Brilliant, she’s ever such a good actress,” is the sort of thing that someone on the internet is likely to say.
“And black as well! Well, to be honest, although it doesn’t really affect me either way, I can appreciate that there are young black girls out there for whom a black Tinkerbell is going to be a source of empowerment and inclusivity, and therefore I can only applaud the whole enterprise.”
Of course, not everyone on the internet is gifted with similar opinions, so there are likely to be different views.
“Well, frankly, the live-action Disneys are not for me,” someone who wasn’t terribly excited about the new film might say.
“I guess I’m just happy with the original animated movies and would rather see more new ideas from Disney. But, as I understand some people do enjoy these films, well, I’m pleased for them.”
“The fact that it features a black actress playing a fictional character traditionally played by a white actress? Could that be a problem to me?” They might scoff.
“Of course not, what kind of crazy person would get all cross about a black woman playing Tinkerbell? It’s not the 1950s.”
On the other hand, there is the tiny possibility that the internet may react to a black actress being cast in such a role by descending into a sewer of racism, threatening to never watch Disney films again and setting fire to their limited-edition Olaf cuddly toy.
