2000’s Gladiator has proven to be one of the most enduring and popular films of the new century, but for twenty years, it has been dogged by speculation that Maximus, the eponymous gladiator, is actually a replicant.
“It’s about the little origami unicorn,” explained Gladiator superfan Barry Gladiator.
“It’s never actually seen in the film, but if there is a little origami gladiator outside Maximus’s cell before he goes out for the final fight, and then if he’d had a dream about origami gladiators the night before, then that means someone knew what he had dreamt, which must mean that he’s a replicant.”
Barry believes that the new sequel will address this speculation head on.
“I would imagine that’s why Ridley is making the sequel, to confirm once and for all that Gladiator and Blade Runner are set in the same universe and that Maximus is a replicant.”
He went on to explain what he suspected the plot would be.
“It’ll pick up straight after the first one, and Maximus is in hiding, recovering, then Paul Mescal, who’s just been announced for the film, he’s a Blade Runner from the future and he appears at Maximus’s door and takes him back to the future where they pick up Ryan Reynolds and Harrison Ford, and they go back to ancient Rome for a huge replicant battle with the emperor.”
Barry has written to director Ridley Scott to offer his services in developing the script but has yet to receive a response.
