The new Aladdin movie will explore the reasons behind the genie being confined to his magic lamp, according to one of the writers of the new adaptation.
The previous Disney film depicted the blue genie as residing in a magic lamp but did not explain how he ended up there in the first place; a strange oversight which the new movie hopes to address.
“It’s all about understanding the back story of the character of the genie,” screenwriter Randy Nunn told us.
“In order to get a grasp of why the genie is the way he is, you have to understand that his life got flipped – turned upside down, if you like – a few years before Aladdin turned up.”
He explained, “The genie was actually born and raised in West Philadelphia, where he spent a considerable amount of his time chilling out, maxing and relaxing on the playground.
“But then, tragically for the genie, a couple of guys who were up to mischief started making trouble in his local area.
“There followed a brief altercation, and sadly after that incident the genie’s mother grew concerned for the safety of her son and sent him to live in the lamp where he was safe.
“And that was the end of that.”
He added, “So that explains why the genie begins the movie with an air of sadness about him. He’s trying to make the best of the situation and have a bit of a laugh, but he wishes he could get out of there and back to West Philadelphia.”
When asked about the future of the genie’s character, director Guy Ritchie said, “The genie is released at the end of the film, as we all know, and heads home, but then with me being me, the genie is gunned down in a drug deal gone wrong shortly afterwards.
“So really, his Mum did have the right idea to keep him safe by sending him away to live in the lamp in the first place.”
