Darkest Hour

Gary Oldman puts on a fat suit and make-up so he can have a few weeks off from acting. Wacky Churchillian fantasy where Winston goes on the Tube and talks to a load of Gor-Blimey-Guv types before deciding Britain should do a war. About as historically convincing as Carry On Up the Khyber.

Trivia

The scene on the London Underground was actually filmed on the New York subway and dressed to look like the Tube

The Churchill fat suit was actually made of real human blubber for authenticity

The original script had Churchill on the moon in 2084 deciding whether to go to war with Mars or not, but it was changed at the last minute to a World War II setting

The popularity of the film saw a Darkest Hour-themed rollercoaster open at Disney World

Bloopers

In an early scene, Churchill’s secretary can be clearly seen using a 13” Macbook pro, which wouldn’t be available until several years after the war.

Quotes

“Don’t tell him, Pike”

“We shall fight them on the beaches, and then have a nice ice-cream and a paddle.”
