2014’s horror classic The Babadook established the titular monster as one of the most terrifying creatures in modern cinema.
Despite becoming an object of fear and horror around the world, the Babadook himself has remained silent, and never chosen to give his side of the story.
Until now.
Speaking exclusively to Screen Idle in pleasant coffee shop in a quiet suburb of Adelaide, the Babadook slams the film for a blatant bias that has ruined his life.
“Look, was I the best guy? No. I accept that,” says the Babadook, as he adds sugar to his cappuccino.
“But that little bastard was using an arsenal on me. Makeshift guns, traps, these things that fire ball bearings.
“He was firing ball bearings at my face. My face! If someone fires ball bearings at your face, wouldn’t you torment his family for weeks causing them to degenerate into madness? Course you would, anyone would, but does the film show that? Does it buffaloes.”
Somewhat agitated now, the Babadook causes the ground to shake a little, spilling Screen Idle’s flat white.
“Sorry mate, you want me to get you another one? It’s no bother.”
We demur, but the offer is telling about the Babadook’s personality. We find him nothing but pleasant, kind and thoughtful.
Apart from the dead dog that he keeps in a bag, but we all have our quirks.
We part as friends and can only hope that if the cult classic gets its much rumoured sequel, Filmmakers are a little more even-handed this time, giving the Babadook chance to show what he’s really like.
