Daniel Day-Lewis, it is understood, is currently in preparation to play the role of a retiring actor.

The famously ‘method’ actor is well-known for his herculean preparation for the roles he plays, from buying a laundrette for My Beautiful Laundrette to travelling back in time to grow an authentic beard for Lincoln.

The role in the new as-yet untitled film is that of a late-middle aged actor who has decided to retire from the film business.

In the film, the actor announces his retirement before taking a final role in a film about a dressmaker, leading many people to believe that his Oscar-nominated performance in Phantom Thread was actually just comprehensive method preparation for this latest role.

“Daniel takes his craft very seriously,” said a close friend.

“I personally don’t know a great deal about this new role other than the character of the retiring actor has a close friend who talks to the press about how seriously the actor takes his craft and, consequently, this entire conversation is just serving as further preparation for Daniel.”

Although the plot of the new film is currently unknown, a scene has been leaked in which a third-rate movie ‘humour’ website writes an amusing article about the retiring actor actually not retiring but merely preparing for a role about a retiring actor.

This then leaves the reader of the article in a state of existential terror as to whether they exist or are merely a figment of the actor’s preparatory imagination.

I’m sure it all works out in the end though.
