Charity shop sells all old X-Files VHS tapes after labelling them ‘boutique collectors editions’

a big pile of old videotapes that aren't boutique collectors editions

A charity shop has sold all of its old X-Files VHS box sets after labelling them ‘boutique collectors editions,’ and putting the price up to £50 each.

Stewart James, the manager, came up with the idea after selling a copy of Ewen McGregor’s The Island that was branded ‘limited collectors edition.’

“I realised that there is a certain sort of person who will buy any old rubbish if you tell them it’s a limited collectors edition,” he chuckled.

“So, I figured out I might be able to shift the X-Files VHS box-sets I’ve had for twenty-odd years. We’ve had hundreds. We had a stock room and an X-Files VHS box-set stock room.”

So, Mr James had a number of ‘boutique collectors edition’ labels made up, stuck them to the box-sets, and placed one in the window.

“At first, nothing happened,” he said.

“Thing was, I was still only charging 50p a box-set and it’s not just something being a limited boutique collectors edition that appeals to these people, it’s paying far, far too much money for things.”

He put the price up to £50.

“It was gone in a couple of minutes. Bloke told me he’d been after a boutique, collectors edition of X-Files for ages. He paid for it and then stuck a picture of it on Facebook with the caption ‘Today’s haul.’

“Within an hour I’d sold the lot. Seems like everyone who saw that Facebook post had always wanted a boutique, collectors edition of X-Files.”

Mr James has no regrets over his actions.

“No, these guys all got their boutique collectors editions, my charity is happy. The only shame is that one bloke told me he’d have paid an extra tenner if they’d been numbered editions.

“Still, I’ve got a load of Sex in the City VHS box-sets out the back. I’ll add a number to the ‘special limited edition stickers’ I’ve bought, and I reckon they’ll go for £70 each.”

Superhero not convinced sidekick funny enough

A popular superhero has made public his concerns that his sidekick might not really be amusing enough to continue in his role.

Cabbage-man was bitten by a radioactive cabbage last year, and consequently he developed the powers of a cabbage.

Ever since that day, he has sworn to use his cabbage-powers to fight crime with the help of faithful friend and sidekick – Jeff.

“Look, I love Jeff, I really do,” said Cabbage-man.

“But, really, I was expecting him to be much funnier.

“I mean, frankly, if he’s not coming out with sarcastic one-liners or wry takes on my heroics, then it’s hard to see what he’s bringing to the table, if I’m honest.

“At this stage, I’d settle for some old-fashioned slapstick. Anything really.”

Sidekick Jeff was quick to hit back.

“I’m doing my best,” he said.

“I mean, only last week, he threw a guy into some boiling water and I went – ‘he’s letting off steam, now’ – alright, I got it off Commando, but I’m trying, you know?”

“We can’t all be bitten by a radioactive cabbage.”

However, Cabbage-man was unconvinced

“I know he’s trying, and that’s great, it really is, but recycling old Arnie lines? It’s not really good enough, is it?

Cabbage-man revealed that he has a plan to resolve the situation.

“Well, I’ve recently discovered Dr Coleslaw’s lair, and I’m planning on taking him down next Tuesday, just after Queer Eye, I love that show.

“So, I’ll give Jeff one last chance, and if he doesn’t come out with at least one real zinger, then I’m going to see if Jim Belushi is free.”
