‘Yeah, I was drunk,’ Paul Thomas Anderson explains Inherent Vice

Paul Thomas Anderson has finally broken his silence regarding his 2014 classic Inherent Vice.

Best remembered for making no sense at all, Inherent Vice featured Joaquin Phoenix having sideburns and mucking about in seventies LA. Several women wear bikinis and Martin Short is a dentist.

“Yeah, I was really, really drunk,” explained Anderson.

“I mean, you know what it’s like when you’re drunk, you have these ideas that seem like great plans like dressing up as some cheese, or going to live in a tree, or making Donald Trump president.

“Well, yeah, I guess it was that kind of night and I figured I’d make Inherent Vice.

“I mean, people come up to me and go ‘hey, you know Inherent Vice? Who was Puck Beaverton?’ I tell them he’s just a metaphor – people love hearing that something is a metaphor in films – but really, I don’t know. I was drunk.”

Anderson goes onto explain that the film came about after celebrating the Oscar nomination for The Master a little too enthusiastically.

“It was pretty wild, I woke up three months later with a movie in the can.

“I suppose, considering everything, the film worked out okay. I mean, there’s a couple of scenes you can hear me giggling or dry-retching, but it’s not too intrusive.

“Hell of a hangover though, won’t be doing that again.”

Anderson’s admission has sparked speculation that Neon Demon, Synecdoche, and Antichrist were also made when their respective directors were drunk as well.
