New Wuthering Heights trailer attracts criticism for lengthy communist diatribes

The new Emerald Fennell adaptation of Wuthering Heights has attracted criticism after a trailer showed both Heathcliff and Catherine making lengthy speeches extolling the virtues of communism.

“I love Wuthering Heights, but that was quite a lot of communism,” said Brontë fan Kelly Grace.

“It’s a shame because I really liked Saltburn so I was quite looking forward to this but I was definitely hoping for a less communism.”

Authorities will be concerned with Kelly’s final thought.

“Still though, I’ll keep an open mind. I’ll definitely watch the film and if it turns out I do like the communism then maybe I’ll get into communism a bit.”

The trailer opens with Margot Robbie’s Catherine sharing a wild embrace with Jacob Elordi’s Heathcliff and as they pull apart, she launches into an impassioned speech about seizing the means of production while Heathcliff nods enthusiastically.

Then we see Heathcliff and Catherine snatching a moment together before Catherine’s wedding. They are in furious debate about whether they should align themselves with Chinese communism, incorporating some free-market principles or stick to a rigidly Marxist doctrine. 

After some more wild embracing on the moors, the couple storm out of a meeting with fellow communist agitators after failing to agree on the composition of a committee to oversee agricultural production plans.

The trailer has been criticised for its departure from the source material and anachronistic political agenda, but representatives of both the Vietnamese and Cuban governments have said that they’re actually really quite looking forward to it.
