Will Smith has revealed that, so seriously did he take his role in the new live action version of Disney’s Aladdin that he spent six months living as a genie.
“Yeah, that was tough,” he laughed.
“I mean, people think that being a genie is great – being magic and doing wishes and everything, but it’s hard work.
He explained how much an average genie does in one day.
“Yeah, you think that a genie—you think someone gets a lamp, rubs the lamp, genie comes out, they hang out and do some wishes and the genie kicks back.
“But, some genies, they’re doing eighteen, twenty wishes a day. You know, a guy finds the lamp, has three wishes and then he passes it around his buddies, and all of them have three wishes.
“These genies really work.”
He also described the moral quandaries.
“Oh man, I had this guy rub my lamp, and so I come out and – hey master, three wishes, blah blah – and his first wish? A re-release of Adam Sandler’s Grown-ups.
“I mean, that’s tough. He’s earned his wish, but on the other hand a re-release of Grown-ups is going to hurt a lot of people.”
Smith managed to solve the problem, however.
“Magicked him up a signed DVD of Grown-ups instead. He was happy and no one got hurt.
“That’s being a genie for you – hard work and tough decisions.”
However, Will Smith is not the only actor to have prepared extensively for the film, with Frank Welker, who voices The Cave of Wonders, recently revealing he spent six months living as a cave in preparation for the role.
Aladdin will be released later this year
