The trailer opens overlooking a craggy cliff.
In stark black and white, the camera moves through the mist to find Godzilla sat smoking a giant Gauloise and staring out to sea.
“Life,” he says with a sigh, “is but a fleeting series of moments to which we attribute meaning.”
Jazz music plays throughout.
“The French New Wave is an incredibly important part of the history of cinema,” explained director Michael Dougherty.
“Men in trenchcoats smoking whilst women in bras look out of the window. It was a wonderful period.
“So, when I was given the opportunity to direct a Godzilla sequel, it seemed the perfect opportunity to really bring that feel of Truffaut and Goddard to a monster movie, which is a type of movie the movement failed to explore.”
It is expected that the majority of the film will take place in a run-down apartment in Paris and will see Godzilla and Mothra fight, make love and smoke whilst the US Army closes in on their position.
There will be a number of largely improvised passages of dialogue from Godzilla about Jean-Paul Satre, Miles Davis and Humphrey Bogart.
It is thought that the Godzilla sequel will be just the first of this summer’s films to look back at the key European film movements with Hobbs and Shaw expected to draw from the Italian neo-realist films of the 40s and 50s and The Angry Birds Movie 2 to feature a huge German expressionist influence.
