A trailer for Terrence Malick’s new film has been released and seems to indicate that it will be an hilarious and wacky sex-comedy.
It had been assumed that A Hidden Life was a sober and thoughtful story of German resistance to Nazis, but the trailer featured a hot-tub party, some ‘bitchin’ rock music and several jokes about flatulence.
“I have had a long career making serious yet beautiful films about the nature of humanity,” explained Malick.
“But now, as I near the end of my life, I feel there is more value in the wacky adventures of attractive young people attempting to have sex with each other than there is about showing the truth and reality of life.”
The trailer opens with flashes of a young man dressing whilst dramatic music builds. A window opens, another young man’s buttocks appear. The music stops and the sound of flatulence is heard before loud rock music plays.
The trailer then goes on to show young men and women in various states of undress in a hot-tub and ends when a ferociously drunk man belches and appears to be about to vomit onto the camera
Although no-one was expecting A Hidden Life to be a sex-comedy, perhaps the clues were laid by the surprising ending of Malick’s 2011 film Tree of Life, which featured a disruly frat house throwing a toga party soundtracked by Guns and Roses and featuring a topless jelly fight.
