Thor: Love and Thunder to be bleak, sober, and restrained examination of relationship in crisis

Thor: Love and Thunder, the new film from Taika Waititi, is to be a bleak, sober and restrained examination of a relationship in crisis.

Following the fallout from the Snap, Thor and Jane make a last attempt to reconnect by taking a weekend in a remote cottage in New England and see the last vestiges of their relationship disintegrate.

“I initially thought that the best way to follow up Thor: Ragnarök would be with another bright, exciting, colourful adventure across space and time, with hilarious dialogue and loud rock and roll music,” said director Waititi.

“But then I thought – No, what is the important thing here? The important thing is two people trying to reconnect and failing, because that is sometimes the truth is that things come to an end.”

The film features just Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, was filmed in black and white, and is set entirely inside the cottage.

“It was important that the audience feels the claustrophobia that the two characters fell. I want everyone who sees this film to feel like they are in a slowly disintegrating relationship. Trapped. Unable to do anything. To emphasise this, there are long scenes of silence as Jane looks out of the window for five minutes or Thor just sits, sadly, in an empty room.

“That is the truth of two people falling apart.”

Waititi also confirmed that his next Thor film will be Thor: It’s All Just Awful, which features just Thor alone in a room, sobbing for two hours.
