McNulty actor Dominic West has revealed that a proposed prequel to the acclaimed TV series The Wire would have explored his character’s origins as a being from a different planet.
“It was a shame that it never got off the ground,” explained West, possible whilst drinking.
“I mean, the show clearly hints that McNulty is an extraterrestrial, particularly in the season with the aliens disguised as humans in the container port.
“But to actually see his home planet would have been great.”
It is understood that The Wire prequel would have been set on the planet Vidor-9.
The young McNulty is introduced in his alien form – naked, purple and with three legs and eyestalks.
He witnesses a murder and when Vidorian police close the case without resolution, he takes matters into his own hands and begins investigating.
His investigations reveal a conspiracy of murder and corruption that goes all the way to top.
“It’s those pencil-neck bureaucrats who run things,” laughs West.
“Even on a different planet, it’s those pencil-neck bureaucrats who run things.”
Naturally, McNulty’s actions in investigating the corruption put him at risk and so he flees the planet in his beat-up spaceship and lands in Baltimore.
He is befriended by Bunk who helps him disguise himself as a human and gets him a job in the police department where he begins investigating Avon Barksdale.
There the film ends and the TV show begins.
It seems unlikely the prequel will ever be made.
West’s revelations come in the wake of leaked plot details for The Sopranos movie prequel The Many Saints Of Newark in which Tony is revealed to have been raised by wizards and fairies in the magical woods north of New Jersey.
