The Northman to see Yorkshire man visit London and be outraged at price of pint

Further details have emerged of The Northman, the new film by Robert Eggers.

The film’s plot will tell the story of a man from the North of England, or ‘Northman’ who visits London and finds himself outraged by the price of a pint, which is nearly twice the price he pays back home.

“It’s the story of a man out of place,” said the Lighthouse director.

“He’s forced to leave his home, the place where he is comfortable and at ease, and travel to what is, to all purpose, a new land. A land where the price of a pint is outrageous – well over a fiver.”

Not only will the Northman have to cope with the beer being overpriced, but also that it’s not as nice as the beer back home. He finds it has an industrial, mass-produced, bland taste to it.

“I think it’s fair to say he struggles, and that’s what the film is about. Like Lighthouse and VVitch, it’s about someone being assaulted by their environment and trying to survive. In the first film, it’s isolation, in the Lighthouse it’s remoteness, and in this new film, it’s the price of a pint.

Should The Northman prove a success then Eggers has plans for a sequel, his first.

“It would show the man return to London and despair at how unfriendly everyone is to each other.”
