The Equalizer 3 sees Robert McCall attempt to extricate his friends from exploitative cellphone contracts

The latest and, potentially, fightiest, instalment in The Equalizer franchise will see Denzel Washington’s Robert McCall attempt to extricate his new friends from some really quite exploitative cellphone contracts.

“McCall’s beaten up the Russian mafia, a corrupt police force, so, with the third film, it was important to try to take that up a step higher, to make our antagonists even more ruthless and evil,” said director Antoine Fuqua.

“Initially we thought about the British Tory Party, but after some investigation, they turned out to a bit too silly. So, we settled on cellphone providers. The worst, right?”

Robert has settled in Italy, and has become friends with nearby villagers. Before long, he notices something is wrong. He finds one old lady sobbing, a family fighting. When he discovers a young couple forced to move out from their apartment, he discovers that they have signed up for an incredibly exploitative cellphone contract.

They have no fixed rate for data and are being charged whenever they access the internet, even to just check Twitter. They are being charged per text, and they only have thirty minutes of free calls a month.

“Robert’s natural demand for justice just kicks in. These people’s lives are being made a misery by a cellphone contract, so he decides to go after the company.

“We see him smash up a local store run by the company, that sends him up to a regional office and there he comes into contact with a legal team who insist the contracts are fair, so he kicks the crap out of those guys and brings the regional office down around them, which sets him for the big showdown at the European head office.

“It’s one of the best corporate action scenes I’ve ever seen. We’re very proud of it.”

Currently, this is planned to be the final Equalizer film, but Fuqua admits he has some other ideas.

“Yeah, we’ve done the Russian mafia and cellphones – I’d love to take on delivery companies. Just try telling Robert McCall that you tried to deliver his package but he was out.”
