A new poll has revealed that Shawshank Redemption is the greatest film of all time amongst people who’ve only ever seen Shawshank Redemption.
“It’s a pretty stunning result. 90% of participants said that Shawshank Redemption was the greatest film ever, a few others gave no preference, and one said Road House,” explained Stewart James, professor of Pointless Metrics at Oxford University.
“It’s interesting to juxtapose the result with people who’ve seen films other than Shawshank Redemption. In those polls, it’s often Shawshank Redemption that wins.
“Now, taking the results of this poll, we know that people who’ve only ever seen Shawshank Redemption will name it as the greatest film of all time.
“Can we therefore extrapolate that a large number of people in ‘normal’ polls name Shawshank Redemption as their greatest film of all time because they’ve only ever seen Shawshank Redemption?
“There’s go to be some reason. I mean, have these people never heard of Tokyo Story? Sunrise? It’s very strange.”
The responses to the poll gave same indication as to why people had only seen Shawshank Redemption.
“Yes. Enjoyable experience but if other films are like that then I think I’m fine with not wasting my time seeing any others,” said one.
“That’s the greatest film ever. I see no point in watching any others, because I don’t see how they can live up to that. I liked the crow best,” said another.
Professor James is planning a new survey of favourite films amongst people who’ve only ever seen Snow White and the Huntsman. The results are expected to be wildly variable.”
