In a delightful touch that is sure to thrill fans, a character in a legacy sequel repeats a famous line from the original film.
The line is given extra weight and pathos because the character has aged a number of years since the original film.
“I tried to imagine what would be a delightful and perhaps slightly moving way to call back to the original film,” said director Jeff Director who really liked the original film when he was younger.
“So, I came up with the idea of having the character, who is now older than he was before, say a line that is recognisable from the original film. I know, right? But, I mean, that’s what they pay me the big bucks for. It’s not every guy who can come in on a legacy sequel like this and go – hey, say that line from the original.
“I would imagine that when he says the line then people in theatres will cheer and possibly even applaud a little, and I like that because they’re cheering not only the line, but the character and perhaps even me a little.”
Stewart James is a fan of the original film who enjoyed the new sequel.
“It was really good because there was a number of characters I was familiar with, but older. I particularly enjoyed the bit where he said a line that I recognise from the original. That was really clever because it was the same line, but in a different, more modern context.”
The film also suggested a character from the original film who is not in the legacy sequel, because the actor that portrays them has become a much bigger star than everyone else and doesn’t really need the money that much, had moved away. Delightful!
