Napoleon Trailer Shows Spectacular 18th Century Inter-Galactic Space Battles

The trailer for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Napoleon was revealed last night and left film fans stunned with its stunning depiction of 18th century inter-galactic space battles.

Beginning with a close-up on the great general, as played by Joaquin Phoenix, the camera pulls back to reveal his vast army. A huge battalion of massive space-warships.

A drop of rain lands on Napoleon’s face, then the rain starts to fall steadily. A pause, then he jumps into his personal space rocket and gives the order to charge.

His spaceships lift off, warp to the centre of the galaxy and engage the enemy, filling the screen with laser blasts and explosions and a space battle that seems to have thousands of ships onscreen at once.

“The sense of scale was important,” said Scott.

“Napoleon was an incredible general whose military conquests are almost unprecedented in history. It was important to really get that scale across on screen.

“The battle you see in the trailer isn’t nearly the biggest in the picture. Wait until you see the battle of Northern Italy. That takes place amongst the rings of Saturn. It’s beautiful and terrible and exciting. The conquest of West Germany takes place, literally, on the edge of the galaxy, in the Kuiper Belt. Ultimately, he wins that battle, but there’s a terrible cost to fighting amongst such an unpredictable system of comets and he loses many of his great generals that day.”

Fans are excited by the trailer.

“Looks awesome,” tweeted one, “can’t believe I used to find 18^th century history boring.”

Historians have criticised the accuracy of Scott’s depiction of the life of the great general, but he’s not worried.

“I’ve taken a few liberties with the truth, yes. But, come on, Pearl Harbour showed a fictional love affair. There were more than 300 Spartans. Pocahontas was just a child. Sometimes a little exaggeration is fine.”
