Legendary director Steven Spielberg has hit out at Netflix films being eligible for Oscars, and stated that, in his belief, only films made by Steven Spielberg be considered for the awards.
He made the comments after Netflix’s Roma did considerably better than Ready Player One at this year’s awards.
“I admired Roma a great deal,” said the Hook director.
“Hell of a picture – beautiful, moving, big-hearted.
“But, when it comes down to it, it wasn’t a Steven Spielberg picture and as such I don’t think it should have been included in the Oscars.”
Initially, the bearded wonder suggested that qualification for the Academy Awards should be based on whether a film is released at the cinema or not, however, he has now taken that idea further.
“Two Best Director awards and one Best Picture award, and now I’ve got to go up against well-crafted pieces of entertainment that are on TV?
“Come on guys, give me a break here.
“Let’s make it so that only Steven Spielberg pictures be allowed in the Oscars or, if I’ve taken some time off, a Martin Scorsese picture.
“That way, the right pictures get the Oscars and everyone can have faith in the system.”
It is thought that Mr Spielberg has privately suggested that the new ‘Spielberg only’ rule be applied retrospectively to all Academy Awards this century, meaning that The Bfg would have actually beat Moonlight to the 2017 best picture award.
