Robert De Niro has confirmed he will reprise arguably his greatest character, Travis Bickle, in a belated follow-up to Taxi Driver in Uber Driver.
It is 40 years since Travis became a national hero, but over time, and with a new generation of people not knowing who he is or what he did, the now-pensionable ex-ex-Marine taxi driver needs to make a living.
As he only owns a clapped out old Volvo with 600,000 miles on the clock. He turns to the only place he knows how to make a quick buck: Uber.
De Niro was pleased to resurrect the character into a modern-day setting, saying, “I mean, Travis was a psychopath, yes. But your average Uber Driver is already more of a psychopath already. I mean, each one is willing to take on a whole city’s worth of Taxi Drivers, isn’t he? They’re nuts!”
The plot follows Travis as he attempts to bare-knuckle box every taxi driver in the city before government legislation denies Uber an official cab licence.
Uber Driver will appear just around the corner from cinemas… no, not that corner; the other corner. In a blue Vauxhall. No, light blue. LIGHT blue. Can’t you hear me? … next Summer.
