Planet of the Bees: New Planet of the Apes spin-off reveals terrifying hyper-intelligent bees

Planet of the Bees, a new spin-off of the Planet of the Apes series, has been revealed in a teaser trailer that features terrifying, hyper-intelligent bees.

The trailer opens with a group of humans, dressed in rags and unable to speak, huddled together in a cave. A buzzing appears outside the cave and the humans shrink back against the wall, clearly terrified. The camera pans to the cave opening as the buzzing sound increases. A group of bees appear, but they are not normal bees. One holds a gun, another a knife, several are wearing uniforms. They hover outside the cave for a moment, then one bee says “pathetic humans”, another flies in and buzzes around a human’s head as he ineffectively swats at it, the bees laugh and fly away.

It is currently unclear if this is taking place on Earth in the same timeline as the Planet of the Apes films, or if this is a different planet that humans from the ape-controlled Earth have escaped to.

“That will all become clear in the picture itself,” explained director Stewart James.

“Right now, we just want to introduce the horrifying prospect of these super-intelligent bees who can think, and talk, and can exploit the frailty of humankind.

“What we see here is an evolution of bee society as they become more intelligent. Yes, they are still an authoritarian species devoted to their Queen but they have now embraced technology and can reason and they are now the ruthless dominant species.

“The picture will explore whether humans can fight back against the bees and free themselves from bee control.”

Planet of the Bees is currently filming, and will be released early next year. Casting is unknown but it has been confirmed that motion-capture pioneer Andy Serkis will be taking on the role of Queen Bee.
