Following a backlash against a proposed ‘Best Popular Film’ category at next year’s Oscars, the Academy have announced that they will be abandoning the plan and will be creating a ‘Best Unpopular Film’ category instead.
The category will allow consideration for the likes of Bruce Willis’s straight-to-DVD work, animated films about owls, and documentaries equating Donald Trump to Abraham Lincoln.
“Okay, so everyone hated ‘Best Popular Film,’ we get that,” said a representative for the Academy.
“So, you know, we’ve listened, we’ve heard those complaints and we’ve learned from them.
“Then we kind of had this genius idea – if everyone hated ‘Best Popular Film,’ then if we do the exact opposite of that – ‘Best Unpopular Film’ then everyone will totally love it.
“I mean, that’s just maths, or ‘math’ as we say in America for some reason.”
The ‘Best Unpopular Film’ category will debut at the 2019 Oscars and will be hosted by James Woods and Gwyneth Paltrow.
